My son John Manning, MD and I are looking forward to presenting a workshop on November 10 at the NAMI NC Annual Conference in Raleigh, NC. It is entitled When Lived Experience Meets Medicine: An ER Doctor And His Mother Collaborate To Improve Mental Health Care.

Description

Each mental health crisis involves multiple viewpoints, including the person experiencing the illness, family members trying to help, first responders making rapid decisions, and healthcare providers delivering care under considerable strain. Yet these groups rarely have the opportunity to learn directly from one another.

This workshop brings together two perspectives seldom presented side by side—a mother who has successfully managed Bipolar I disorder for more than forty years and her son, a clinical informatics specialist, healthcare technology innovator, and emergency medicine physician who treats psychiatric emergencies.

Building on their NAMICon 2023 Express Talk, Avoiding Transference for Mental Health Behavior by EMS, Hospital Staff, and Law Enforcement, this workshop expands the discussion beyond crisis intervention to prevention, communication, recovery, and technology's role in creating safer, more compassionate mental health care. The central message is simple: technology alone cannot transform mental healthcare. Technology guided by lived experience, clinical expertise, and compassion can.
